Police in Limassol find Olga Vasilieva’s body in a well
A 43-year-old man is held after allegedly confessing to her murder.
Police in Limassol say the body of 61-year-old Olga Vasilieva, reported missing in October, was found in a well in the mountain area of Saitas on 31 October.
A 43-year-old man was detained in connection with the case after he indicated the location to investigators, Cyprus media report. Police had initially treated the case as a missing person before information later pointed to a serious crime.
Vasilieva had been reported missing on 28 October. Her last contact was earlier, and her phone was switched off. Her car was found abandoned near Linopetra.
On 30 October, police detained the man at Larnaca airport. Cyprus reports say he had a personal relationship with Vasilieva. He was suspected of intentional murder and kidnapping with intent to kill. Police said he tried to leave Cyprus after the missing person information was published.
Investigators also probed alleged financial motives. Court materials cited by Politis describe a relationship of about five months and the claim that the man needed money to pay compensation linked to a traffic incident. Police checks found no records matching the story.
The case materials also mention an alleged jewellery fraud. The man reportedly admitted that a necklace he presented as jewellery worth between 9,000 and 10,000 euros was fake, and that he had prepared a forged certificate of authenticity.
Police carried out searches after tracing the last mobile phone signal of Vasilieva to the area of Moni. Media reports add that investigators seized the suspect’s car and two pieces of women’s clothing found in his luggage, with forensic examinations ordered.
The investigation continues as authorities await the court medical conclusions, which are expected to determine the exact cause of death. The man is in custody and will face the next steps in the legal process.
