Orlando police arrest Dale Smith Jr in Michelle Parker murder
Charged nearly 15 years after Parker vanished following a People’s Court appearance.
Orlando Police arrested Dale Smith Jr and charged him with second-degree murder nearly 15 years after Michelle Parker vanished in 2011.
Police said Smith was the last known person to see or hear from Parker on Nov. 17, 2011, after she dropped their children off at his home. Parker then failed to arrive for her bartending shift that night.
At the time, police said the day after Parker disappeared, her car was found on the west side of Orlando and her cellphone was recovered from a lake south of the city.
A People’s Court episode involving Smith and Parker aired the same November day. Police also described conflicting statements from Smith over the years. He denied involvement and pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court Oct. 15, Fox 35 Orlando reported.
Orlando Police said the arrest followed a fresh review of the evidence and advances in digital forensics. The department said it re-examined testimony and conflicting statements, then used new technology to uncover and analyze additional evidence. Detective Philip McMican said officers today can interpret that material better than they could in 2011.
At a press conference Oct. 14, the Orlando Police Chief said the case never stopped being a priority. The department said Parker has not been located and that all evidence leads to Smith as the person responsible for her murder. The investigation remains ongoing.
