West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, working with West Yorkshire Police and the Health and Safety Executive, seized more than 30 tonnes of fireworks after a multi-agency operation in Bradford and Calderdale. The activity began after WYFRS inspected two premises on Darley Street in Bradford in October. Fireworks were seized from the locations while enquiries continued. Investigators then carried out further work at additional locations in Bradford and Calderdale, identifying more fireworks. Quantities were seized and removed to safeguard the public as the agencies worked to establish the exact quantities involved, how the fireworks were stored and whether legal requirements were being met. So far, the seized fireworks have been assessed as having explosive content of more than 5.5 tonnes. After the Darley Street seizures, West Yorkshire Police, with support from Bradford Council, applied to Bradford Magistrates Court for a 48-hour closure order on premises used and or operated by Big Shotter Fireworks Ltd. The order was granted and later extended to 12 November 2026. It remains in place pending further consideration by the courts. The operation followed wider days of action over the last fortnight across all five West Yorkshire districts, with WYFRS, West Yorkshire Police and West Yorkshire Trading Standards targeting businesses suspected of selling illegal goods or fireworks contrary to legislation. Those days of action resulted in seizures including cigarettes, vapes and unlicensed children’s toys, with an estimated value of more than £100,000. The fireworks operation is still ongoing, with investigations continuing and the court closure order currently in force.
