Palermo, 30-year-old accused of stealing a car and attacking police
Arrested after a high-speed escape and minor injuries to Carabinieri, the suspect had no driving licence.
A 30-year-old man is accused of stealing a car in Palermo and attacking Carabinieri during a high-speed escape after being stopped for an interception.
The incident began in viale Lazio, where the theft of the vehicle was reported. Carabinieri from the Altarello di Baida station intercepted the car near via Gela and ordered the driver to stop, but he fled.
The suspect was later caught in viale Regione Siciliana when traffic forced him to stop. Police said he carried out sudden manoeuvres to break away, pressing the Carabinieri against a barrier of the tram line and causing them minor injuries.
Carabinieri continued their search even after the injuries. The man was eventually found in the courtyard of a condominium, after abandoning the car and hiding in a small storage space. When officers moved in, he resisted again before being immobilised and secured with help from other units.
The arrest was upheld by the judge for preliminary investigations at the Tribunal of Palermo, who ordered the suspect to be held in pre-trial custody in the Pagliarelli prison.
He faces charges including aggravated theft, resistance and causing injuries to a public official, and driving without a licence, a case reported with repeated violations in the past two years.
