Paris police detain 350 people after violent weekend unrest
Three dozen shops were damaged, with nearly 2,400 people held over the protests.
French police in Paris detained 350 people during and after the weekend unrest linked to protests, authorities said.
Police say dozens of shops were damaged across the capital, with three dozen businesses hit. Paris prosecutors said the search will not slow down for people suspected of violence and looting since Saturday.
A key official tally shows how wide the crackdown has been. In France, police detained nearly 2,400 people in connection with the violence during Saturday demonstrations.
The interior ministry said 997 police officers and gendarmes were injured during the weekend unrest, including seven reported as seriously hurt. Paris prosecutors said many suspects are now being held.
French interior minister Laurent Nuñez admitted there was “insufficient foresight” in how security forces were deployed. He later submitted his resignation after the unrest, but President Emmanuel Macron did not accept it, saying security leadership needed to remain in place.
In a televised address, Macron said nothing justifies violence during the protests. He said those who attacked government buildings must face consequences for their crimes.
As of the latest update, dozens of detainees remain in custody while police continue searching for those suspected of violence and looting.
