Police used pepperspray outside Werder Bremen’s stadium after the team’s 3-2 win over FC Augsburg, leading to injuries and anger among supporters. The match was on 19 September. After the final whistle, a confrontation broke out near the Osttribune between supporters and police, and several people came into contact with pepperspray. Supporters’ organization Groen-Wit Hulp says the police response was excessive. It claims multiple Werder supporters were injured, including a young supporter who would have been rendered unconscious and treated by ambulance personnel. Police disputed that account. A police spokesperson said the incident followed the arrest of a man suspected of offences during an earlier away match in Wolfsburg, a game that had already ended with confrontations between supporters and police. The arrest after the Augsburg match initially went without problems, but other supporters then tried to free the detainee. According to the police, officers sprayed pepperspray to protect the arrest and target people who attacked agents. The force spread, and police said it could not be fully prevented from reaching bystanders. Police confirmed that one person needed medical treatment. Groen-Wit Hulp challenged the justification and the location of the spray. The organization said it happened on stadium grounds near the wheelchair entrance, while many supporters were leaving the stadium calmly. The incident is not isolated, Groen-Wit Hulp added, saying police have tried in recent months to intimidate supporters and subject them to identity checks. Werder Bremen has announced it wants to investigate the events, and it plans to speak with supporters, authorities and politicians.
