Police Academy open day in Tacen draws around 400 visitors
The event was held with the Employment Service of Slovenia to promote police careers.
Around 400 people attended the Police Academy in Tacen for its open day on 6 August 2026.
The event was organised in collaboration with the Employment Service of Slovenia and was designed to attract people interested in joining the police force, studying the short-cycle higher vocational study policing programme, and exploring employment and career-development opportunities within the police.
Visitors began with an introductory presentation covering enrolment requirements, the structure of the two-year training programme, and employment and pay during training. The academy also highlighted the police college training model, under which police cadets are employed by the police throughout their studies, receive a salary, and have their study period counted towards their pensionable years of service.
The gathering was addressed by the Minister for the Interior and Public Administration, Franci Matoz, the Acting Director General of the Police, Danijel Lorbek, and the Director General of the Employment Service of the Republic of Slovenia, Greta Metka Barbo Škerbinc. They focused on the importance of recruiting new staff and on the opportunities available through a police career.
After the presentations, attendees toured the Police Academy and attended information sessions about the mission, work, equipment and vehicles of different police units. The programme included a demonstration of a modern off-road vehicle used by the border police, acquired with support from EU funding.
There was also an interactive segment aimed at giving visitors hands-on experience. Under the guidance of police instructors, participants tried safe weapon-handling fundamentals using the Simunition system, which is described as a realistic yet safe simulation of firearms use. Visitors learned the correct stance and how to aim and fire as part of practical training similar to what future police officers receive.
The Police Academy said the strong turnout and the level of questions showed sustained interest in pursuing a police career, including ahead of a second police college enrolment deadline running from 21 to 27 August 2026.
