Police detained two men in Košice over suspected human smuggling involving five Ukrainian nationals. The case ties to an October escape of a vehicle from a police patrol near the Zemplín area. On October 1, officers spotted a suspicious car in Kolbasov in the Snina district. The driver ignored orders to stop and fled, with police eventually stopping the vehicle between Dlhé nad Cirochou and Belá nad Cirochou. Inside they found five Ukrainian nationals, whom police said had allegedly crossed the state border illegally. Investigators then suspected at least two men were involved. One accused man was allegedly paid to escort five people on foot through a forest, from the area of the state border to Kolbasov. A second accused man then allegedly drove the group by car toward Košice. The police identified the second suspect through operational and search work. The arrests were carried out during an action called Pešiak, conducted last Wednesday, with support from officers from the Košice-Nad Jazerom district and a response team from the Border and Alien Police Directorate in Sobrance. Both men have been charged with the crime of smuggling, committed as accomplices. A court ordered both suspects into pre-trial detention, and if convicted they face 7 to 10 years in prison.
