Latvian State Police have detained a man suspected of intentionally setting fire to cars in Lucavsala, Riga. Police said that at the end of August, two passenger cars burned in the Riga Pārdaugava area, and a nearby Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI was also damaged. No one was injured in the fire. The incident was reported on 27 August morning, when an unknown person set fire to two parked vehicles, a BMW 640 and a Volkswagen Caravelle. Investigators later found that the two burned cars were linked to the same person. A criminal investigation was launched under Section 185(2) of the Criminal Law for intentional destruction or damage of someone else’s property by burning. Police investigators reported that the cars were likely set alight after being doused with a flammable liquid. Police said they worked through the case even after initially having no leads. The man, born in 1996, was identified as a possible suspect, and he was detained on 22 September once his whereabouts were established. Authorities estimated the total damage at 18,622 euros. The suspect is facing up to 10 years in prison, with probation supervision of up to three years, or without it. Police have applied preventive measures including placing him under police supervision and banning him from leaving the country. The investigation remains ongoing.
