Police arrest 57-year-old over Lkw fires at A7 and A27
Investigation links attacks at motorway rest areas in Heidekreis and Cuxhaven; suspect remanded.
Police in northern Germany have arrested a 57-year-old truck driver from Hessen after a series of fires involving parked semi-trailers on motorway lay-bys.
Cuxhaven police said the suspect was taken into custody after several fires on an Autobahn parking site on the A 27 near Hagen im Bremischen. A warrant for remand was carried out on 12 October.
He is now accused of deliberately setting the fires, with Heidekreis police saying there is a pressing suspicion that he caused the blaze. Investigators are treating the case as connected to earlier incidents in the region.
At the end of August, multiple reports of fires at an Autobahn rest stop were made in Heidekreis. On 25 August, a patch of vegetation burned first at the Lüneburger Heide Ost service area on the A 7 in the direction of Hamburg. Shortly afterwards, the wheel arches of two parked semi-truck units caught fire. Fire crews extinguished the flames.
Back then, police could not rule out deliberate arson. The investigative team from Cuxhaven has now also identified the same 57-year-old as a suspect in connection with the Heidekreis incidents. Further investigations are ongoing.
The man remains in investigation custody following the remand warrant, while police continue to probe whether the A 7 and A 27 fires were carried out by the same person.
