Malaysian police have crippled “Geng Suria”, an organised crime group linked to 20 cases of property and violent crimes in Kedah. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said the operation, Op Sunset, was carried out from Sept 24 to 27 with the Kedah CID in Kedah and Perak. Police say the group consisted of nine members aged 28 to 52, led by a 30-year-old local man, and was believed to have been active since early 2024. During the operation, officers arrested six suspects aged 28 to 39. The other three members were held at Sungai Buloh Prison, Pokok Sena Prison and Sungai Petani Prison for other criminal offences. The six suspects were detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) until Oct 25. Investigators said checks showed previous criminal records involving vehicle theft, housebreaking, drug offences, gang robberies and causing grievous hurt using sharp weapons. Police also seized six mobile phones and 189 ecstasy pills weighing an estimated 101.12 grammes. An investigation into the drug seizure was opened under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Kumar said the group’s modus operandi was to target homes belonging to foreigners, business premises and residential properties identified by the group leader. Police said members used weapons including knives and machetes during robberies and injured victims to facilitate their criminal activities. The investigation papers were referred to the Serious Crimes Unit of the Attorney-General’s Chambers, and approval was obtained to charge all nine members under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code for being members of an organised crime group. All nine are scheduled to be charged tomorrow at the Sungai Petani Sessions Court in Kedah.
