Police in Bavaria have temporarily detained a suspect after a large fire engulfed Hitler’s former mountaintop residence known as Orlie hniezdo. The blaze broke out overnight into Saturday at the Kehlsteinhaus building above Obersalzberg, in southern Germany. Around 200 firefighters were deployed, and police said no one was injured. Fire crews found the building already fully in flames when they arrived. The remote location at 1,834 metres above sea level made the operation difficult. Emergency services received the alarm on Friday at about 21:50, when a smoke detector triggered. Police said firefighters could only enter the building with heavy breathing apparatus. Video from a weather camera showed the historic structure still burning in the early hours of Saturday, with snow falling on the Alpine summit. Police closed the access road to the residence while firefighters searched the site and found no one inside. A police spokeswoman, Lisa Maierová, said, “The suspicious person was temporarily detained.” The cause of the fire has not been officially announced. German media reported investigators are looking into possible arson, and Bild said a motorcyclist was detained en route to the fire, a detail police had not confirmed by the planned Saturday press conference.
