Police arrest 565 people after clashes during France protests in Paris
Molotov cocktails and hundreds of riot officers used tear gas and water cannons to disperse masked groups.
French police deployed riot forces after clashes broke out in Paris and other French cities on 31 October, following weekend demonstrations against the rising cost of living.
Authorities said more than 500 people were arrested, with 565 detained across the country by the end of the day. In Paris, four police officers and a gendarme were injured, including three burned by Molotov cocktails, as officers used water cannons and tear gas to break up violent disturbances.
In the capital, fights flared after a march in the Paris suburbs, when confrontations erupted as crowds moved toward their final meeting point. The police said dozens of masked men dressed in black pulled up paving stones with hammers and threw them at officers. Officers responded with tear gas and batons, while the Paris police prefecture said hundreds of rioters attacked forces of the order with projectiles.
The government said overall demonstrations had largely remained calm, but it condemned the violence as unusually severe. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez called the Molotov attack a “attempt to murder,” adding that the targeted officer had only suffered minor injuries.
A night curfew was imposed in Paris districts including République and Châtelet-Les Halles from 23:00 to 06:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Across France, officials said “extremists” tried to enter the city centres of Bordeaux, Toulouse and Marseille to commit vandalism and looting. In Toulouse, police used water cannons to disperse a large unauthorized demonstration. In Lyon, protesters threw projectiles that forced police to use tear gas.
Latest police updates put the arrests at 565 nationwide on 31 October, after clashes involving riot police, tear gas, water cannons and injuries from Molotov cocktails.
