Police seize 12 vehicles at Broughton retail park during young driver crackdown
Officers issued 15 tickets and arrested a driver on suspicion of drink-driving.
North Wales Police’s Roads Crime Unit seized 12 vehicles from young drivers after responding to reports of ongoing problems at Broughton Retail Park.
Officers carried out a road safety operation on Friday and dealt with offences including speeding and using a mobile phone while driving. They also attended a damage-only collision and issued 15 tickets. A driver was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.
The crackdown formed part of Op Spotlight Young Drivers, a campaign that mixes road safety advice with enforcement against motorists putting themselves or other road users at risk. Police said patrols will continue after the campaign.
During the wider operation, a 25-year-old man was arrested twice on suspicion of drug-driving after testing positive for cannabis and cocaine following two separate stops. He was first stopped in Bangor shortly after midnight on September 26 and was released under investigation while officers awaited further test results. Despite being warned, he returned to his vehicle and was stopped again while travelling eastbound on the A55 towards his home in Shotton, Flintshire, leading to a second arrest.
In another incident linked to the campaign, an 18-year-old woman was reported for driving without insurance after crashing her friend’s car into another vehicle at Broughton Shopping Park shortly after 9pm on September 24. The car was seized.
Police also reported a young driver caught travelling at 82mph in a 60mph zone and seized an electric scooter being ridden in Caernarfon on September 28. Officers visited other places where young drivers gather, including Mostyn Champneys Retail Park in Llandudno.
Sergeant Simon Hughes said most young people drive responsibly, but police will take action where behaviour puts people at risk. He urged parents and guardians to reinforce road safety advice.
The drink-driving arrest and other matters reported during Op Spotlight are under ongoing police action following the operation.
