Police in Zeytinburnu came under fire after an armed suspect opened fire at their request, and one person was shot and captured. The incident took place in Istanbul’s Veliefendi neighbourhood at night, when officers responding to an alert arrived at an address and asked a suspect to open the door. Instead of complying, the suspect opened the door and directly fired at the police. Officers returned fire within the scope of self defence. One attacker was hit in the leg and rendered incapable of further action. Medical teams arrived at the scene, provided first aid, and then transferred the injured suspect to hospital. A second suspect present at the address was also detained by police. After securing the area with a safety perimeter, teams launched a broad investigation. Forensic teams carried out a detailed examination at the apartment. Searches led to the seizure of the pistol the shooter used, along with multiple rounds of ammunition. Police said they are continuing their investigation into what led up to the attack and into possible connections between those involved.
