A 41-year-old Portuguese man wanted in France over a fatal altercation has been detained in Vila Nova de Famalicão, police said. The arrest happened on Wednesday, 14 October, under a European Arrest Warrant issued by France, the Portuguese Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) said in a statement sent to the media on Saturday. The man is accused of voluntary manslaughter and serious bodily harm linked to an incident in Marseille in March 2023. Prosecutors say he got into an altercation with a 57-year-old man, who later died, and the Portuguese fugitive fled to Portugal. PSP said the charges in France carry a maximum penalty of up to 30 years in prison. After being brought before the Guimarães Court of Appeal, he was placed in pre-trial detention. He is now being held at an establishment in Portugal while the court decides on extradition to France. His case is still pending, with the next step focused on whether France will receive him for the process there.
