A 33-year-old man was arrested in Poviglio after a daytime bicycle theft, following a tip and CCTV footage showing him taking a bike from a fenced courtyard. Police in Poviglio, Reggio Emilia, were alerted yesterday at 10.35 when a citizen reported a man known for thefts in the area riding at speed on a bicycle along via Manzoni towards Brescello. Carabinieri units from Guastalla moved quickly and intercepted the suspect about twelve minutes later in via Poviglio a Brescello. The man was riding a grey Raleigh city bike, model Manhattan. When questioned, he claimed he had borrowed the bicycle from a cousin in viale Diaz. A phone call to the woman brought a sharp denial. She said she had never lent out the bike and that she had her own bicycle with her at work. Further checks identified the legitimate owner as a 45-year-old resident of the same building in viale Diaz. She confirmed she had left the bicycle that morning in the condominium courtyard behind a pedestrian gate before going to work. The decisive confirmation came from an analysis of surveillance systems at a commercial activity nearby. The images showed the suspect entering the courtyard on foot and leaving shortly after in the stolen bicycle, and his clothing matched what officers later saw on the man stopped in Brescello. The arrest also followed a prior court measure. Only a few weeks earlier, a court in Reggio Emilia had imposed an obligation to present daily to the police judicial authority on the same man after an arrest for bicycle theft at the end of September.
