Pro-Kremlin blogger Mikhail Zvinchuk returns to Russia after Montenegro expulsion
Rybar founder was deported from Montenegro, landed in Moscow at 1:40am Sunday.
A pro-Kremlin military blogger deported from Montenegro earlier this week has returned to Russia, a Russian TV outlet reported.
Mikhail Zvinchuk, founder of the “Rybar” Telegram channel, arrived at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport at 1:40am Sunday (2240 GMT on Saturday), with his wife Valeria and three other people from the project.
Zvinchuk had been detained along with his wife and three other Russian citizens during a Montenegro “crime prevention operation”, police said, adding they acted with “support of international partners” without elaborating.
Montenegro then ordered his expulsion on national security grounds on Friday, but did not say where he would be deported.
At Sheremetyevo, Zvinchuk credited Russia’s foreign ministry with his release in a video shown by the RTVI outlet.
Rybar said on Friday that its team had been in Montenegro “legally and officially” and planned to film at the Cetinje Monastery. Vijesti reported the documentary was intended to criticize Montenegro’s steps to move closer to the European Union, warning it could harm tourism, economic stability and Montenegro’s national interests.
The United States says Zvinchuk is wanted over alleged election interference, and the European Union has sanctioned him over alleged promotion of pro-Russia propaganda.
He is now back in Russia after being detained and deported from Montenegro.
