PSP detains suspected instigator of attack on Luís Montenegro’s home in Porto
A young man was held for instigating public violence and released the same day on identity and residence terms.
Police in Porto detained a young suspect accused of calling for an attack on the residence of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro during a housing rights demonstration.
Officers arrested the suspect this Sunday afternoon near the entrance to the Universidade Técnica do Porto, where he had gone to vote in Brazil’s presidential elections. He was taken to the PSP’s Criminal Investigation Division.
Police said the suspect was identified from footage filmed about two weeks earlier in Praça D. João I. In the images, he allegedly urged viewers to share the prime minister’s home address and backed an attack on the residence, also using statements in favour of violence.
After the video was released, Luís Montenegro said he was concerned the remarks amounted to a direct call for violence and included threats directed at the home where he lives with his family.
At the PSP facility, the suspect was made an accused party for the crime of public instigation to a crime and was ordered to sign a Termo de Identidade e Residência, with police saying he should be released later the same day.
