Latvian police have completed their investigation into a suspected particularly cruel murder in Rēzekne, where a man’s body was found on a building balcony. In early January 2026, police received a report about a missing person. During the search, officers found the man’s body in a multi-apartment building balcony area with signs of violent death. Investigators later reported that on 7 January 2026 they received information about a 1999-born man reported missing from the North Latgale area. On 9 January, officers located the body at the address, with investigators saying he had been killed with particular cruelty. They also said the body had been wrapped in a blanket and placed on the balcony. During the investigation, police said an alcohol-fuelled conflict between those involved preceded the crime. With operational search work, officers supported by units in Riga detained two suspected offenders, men born in 1993 and 1998. Both detained men received pre-trial detention. The 1993-born suspect had detention applied in a separate criminal process as well. The case was qualified under Article 117, paragraph 4, and paragraph 10 of the Criminal Law. The offence carries a possible life imprisonment term or a custodial sentence from 10 to 20 years. Police said the investigation is finished and that the case materials were handed over to the prosecutor on 30 October for the start of criminal prosecution proceedings.
