Police in Saône-et-Loire stopped a driver on the A6 after reports of dangerous driving in the night of 5 to 6 October 2026. According to the gendarmerie, a witness called them after seeing a car hit the guardrail repeatedly, with unexplained acceleration and braking, and even sparks while driving on its rims. The vehicle pulled over on the Sablons service area. Officers arrested the driver and ran an alcohol test. The result was 0.96 mg/l of exhaled air, far above the 0.25 limit. The man asked officers to call his mother to come pick him up. When she arrived, she was also tested and returned a positive result of 0.46 mg/l. She told the gendarmes she had been drinking without realizing she would need to drive that night. The gendarmerie said both results fall into the “offence” level when the rate exceeds 0.40 mg/l, a threshold that can lead to up to three years in prison and a 4,500 euro fine. They also mention measures that may include vehicle confiscation, permit cancellation, a road-safety awareness course, or a ban on driving a vehicle without a certified breathalyzer immobiliser, along with a six-point withdrawal on the driving licence. The driver and his mother have both been stopped with positive tests, and the case is handled under the road-safety sanctions described by the authorities.
