French singer Michel Sardou says he was arrested mid-concert and ended up punching a police lieutenant after the man allegedly insulted him at a station. The incident dates to the early years of Sardou’s career. He had moved without getting his address change properly recorded, so he did not receive a letter about military obligations. He was then treated as insubordinate, with the plan to send him to Montauban to complete his military service. While performing on stage, two gendarmes went backstage and told him, “Monsieur, vous êtes insoumis, vous êtes envoyé à Montauban pour faire vos classes.” Sardou was immediately handcuffed in his dressing room. The military staff allegedly would not let him change or contact his wife, and he was taken by train to Montauban still in his stage suit and makeup. At the police station, Sardou said his appearance drew attention and led to remarks from an agent. He says the agent’s words were insulting. Sardou, who practiced boxing at the time, told how he reacted with a punch: “Je lui mets un pain dans la gueule et je l’envoie au fond de la salle de police.” He later learned that the person he had struck was not just an agent, but a lieutenant of police. The episode is set to be recounted in the documentary “Michel raconte Sardou,” due to air on M6 on 13 November.
