Saudi Arabia executes 2 Bangladeshis over act in Makkah mosque
Bangladesh consulate in Jeddah says it was not notified beforehand.
Saudi Arabia executed two Bangladeshis after convictions over an “immoral act” committed inside a mosque in Makkah, according to Saudi authorities.
The Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah said it was not notified by the ministry beforehand and has contacted Saudi authorities. It submitted a note verbale to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeking formal acknowledgement of the executions.
The men were identified as Nazerul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, the Saudi Ministry of Interior said, carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.
Saudi security authorities arrested the two and an investigation led to charges being brought before a court. The ministry said the court found the charges proven and sentenced them to death under “ta'zir”, a form of discretionary punishment under Islamic law, citing the gravity of the offence and the violation of the sanctity of the time and place.
The verdict became final after being upheld by the relevant authority, and a royal order was issued for implementation. The official statement did not name the mosque or set out the precise nature of the act.
No further custody or appeal details were provided in the report, but the executions were carried out following the final verdict and royal order.
