Eight Serbian police officers have been arrested over allegations that they tortured a 40-year-old detainee, who later died. Prosecutors said the officers face suspicions of causing serious bodily injuries that led to death, as well as assault and torture. The arrests were announced after investigators uncovered how the alleged abuse happened while the man was in custody. The case stems from March 2024, when a 2-year-old girl disappeared in the city of Bor. Police concluded the child had been killed and arrested two suspects. While the investigation continued, the girl’s body was never found. In April 2024, police arrested the brother of one of the suspects, believing he may have been involved in the disappearance of the body. The 40-year-old man died while being held in custody. At the time, police said he passed away after feeling unwell, but media later published information pointing to forensic findings that he had been beaten to death. Nearly two years after the detention death, the Serbian prosecution moved against eight officers. Prosecutors said the officers had been previously ordered for arrest, but internal affairs at the Ministry of the Interior did not take the necessary steps. The latest status is that the eight officers are now arrested and accused over the alleged torture and assault tied to the detainee’s death.
