Belgrade prosecutors have arrested the head of the city’s Criminal Police Directorate and the chief of its crime-fighting unit on suspicion of abuse of office. Marо Кричак, 42, was detained together with Boško Sekulović, after the Serbian prosecution said both men were suspected of abusing their position and failing to carry out professional duties, causing harm to former Belgrade police chief Vese lin Milić. Prosecutors denied the arrests were linked to last week’s parliamentary election. Kričak was previously linked to controversy over police violence. His name came to wider attention after student leader Nikolina Sinđelić accused him of using police force in the garage of the Serbian government building during last August’s mass anti-government protests. The case also ties back to a separate investigation. According to prosecutors, the two police directors were being investigated following the May killing of a suspected offender in a well-known Belgrade restaurant. Milić himself was arrested three days after the killing, accused of failing to report a crime and of providing assistance to the offender. At the same time, thousands of people gathered in Novi Sad to mark the victims of a rail station disaster two years ago, when a concrete canopy collapse killed 16 people, including children.
