Serbian authorities have detained nine active police officers and one former officer over alleged use of excessive force against detainees during anti-corruption protests in Belgrade. Interior Ministry officials said the suspects served in an elite unit and were detained after allegations relating to events in the garage of the government compound in downtown Belgrade on August 14 and 15, 2025. Police said the officers allegedly tortured and intimidated several people held in custody. The Interior Ministry described the alleged abuse as involving the use of force and threats, carried out with the aim of obtaining information and intimidating and unlawfully punishing detainees. The arrests are the first major detentions connected to violence during the street protests that swept Serbia in 2025 and 2026. During the demonstrations, police used tear gas, crowd-control vehicles and stun grenades to disperse crowds. Students, activists, opposition politicians and rights watchdogs had accused President Aleksandar Vucic and the SNS of political violence, media pressure, ties to organised crime and corruption, with Vucic and his allies denying the accusations. The suspects were detained by Serbian authorities and are awaiting further legal steps as the investigation continues.
