Police in northern Greece arrested a sheepfold owner after finding cannabis plants growing beside hundreds of suspected Serres antiquities. Officers from the Hellenic Police drug squad of the Serres Crime Investigation Sub-directorate made the arrest on Friday, 16 October. The suspect faces charges under Greece’s drug laws and laws protecting antiquities and cultural heritage. Police first stopped the man and found two packages of raw cannabis weighing 9.8 grams on him. A search of his sheepfold in the wider Serres area followed, where officers seized seven cannabis plants, 1.3 to 2 metres tall, growing in pots. They also recovered six packages weighing 86 grams and 1.69 kilograms of cannabis plant material, plus a precision scale. In the same building, investigators found 214 bronze coins, 42 bronze arrowheads and 28 lead sling bullets. Police also seized 21 bronze bracelets plus part of another, 19 lamps and 17 figurines or figurine fragments. Further objects included 16 bronze rings, 11 bronze pendants and 10 clay perfume vessels. Investigators recovered eight clay vessels, including a cup and drinking cups known as skyphoi, plus a small amphora, along with 26 other objects. An archaeologist from the Ephorate of Antiquities carried out a first assessment and said the antiquities fall under Greece’s antiquities law. Police then seized additional items including 90 coins, 74 metal objects and 10 silver coins, plus eight fragments of copper slag and six of silver slag for further examination. In a house the man used, officers found four more packages of raw cannabis weighing 489.8 grams, along with a second precision scale. After the arrest, police took the suspect before the Serres public prosecutor, and the case then went to an investigating magistrate.
