A Philadelphia police officer, Shane Seiber, was shot and killed in West Philadelphia early Saturday, and a murder suspect has been charged. Officer Seiber, 40 and a 10-year veteran, died at the hospital after being shot three times. Another officer, 33, was wounded 12 times and was listed in stable condition after the attack. Police were called to the 100 block of North 52nd Street shortly after 12:20 a.m. for reports of a man with a gun on a porch. Officers arrived about 30 minutes later, and gunfire erupted as they stepped onto the porch. The suspect fled down an alleyway and allegedly shot at other officers, who were not struck. A search and neighborhood lockdown followed as police searched for the gunman. District Attorney Larry Krasner identified the suspect as 35-year-old Eric Lewis. Lewis was charged with murder, homicide of a law enforcement officer, and multiple weapons offenses tied to Seiber’s killing. He was also charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting the wounded officer and for allegedly firing at nine other officers who were not hit. Court records show Lewis had prior arrests for gun, drugs, and assault charges between 2013 and 2020. Officers recovered two handguns and a shotgun during the investigation, including a handgun that police said belonged to an officer who was shot. Lewis was eventually taken into custody after falling out of a tree. The latest status is that he has been charged, and the case is moving through the court system.
