Slavi Binev, former European Parliament member and head of Bulgaria’s taekwondo federation, was shot dead in his Sofia home on Saturday, police detained three men after the incident. Sofia authorities were alerted after gunshots were heard around 10:20. An ambulance arrived about seven minutes later, and doctors confirmed Binev had died. Police said three men were at the residence and were believed to be frequent visitors. A witness reported hearing a shot and then seeing the three leave in a car. Officers identified the vehicle as it exited Sofia and intercepted it near the Porțile lui Traian tunnel on the highway. During the arrest, police used a blocking maneuver to prevent resistance. Officers found two firearms, one of which was believed to have been used to kill Binev and then thrown away before the car was stopped. A second pistol was found in a small bag belonging to one of the men. Investigators recovered a single spent cartridge at the crime scene. Police said Binev was killed by one bullet that hit him in the head. Police also said they had detained three suspects. Two of them reportedly have Turkish citizenship and Turkish names, while the third has a Bulgarian identity document. All three reportedly work in construction and were developing two residential complexes in Sofia. Police leadership said the case cannot yet be classified as an ordered assassination, citing the long-standing relationship between Binev and the three men and the lack of signs of efforts to hide their identities. Investigators are still working out the exact circumstances, including whether there was any connection to other recent killings of businessmen, and they consider a possible financial dispute. As of now, the investigation continues with the three detained suspects in custody while authorities gather evidence.
