Slovenia issues landmark terrorism conviction with Eurojust evidence support from Iraq
The judgment is not yet final after Eurojust helped obtain crucial evidence within the remand timeline.
A recent ruling in Slovenia delivered the first judgment in the country where an asylum seeker was sentenced to five years in prison for membership of a foreign terrorist organisation. The decision is not yet final.
According to Eurojust, the case involved the Specialised State Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Slovenia, which sought crucial evidence located in Iraq.
Eurojust said it provided swift support to help the Slovenian prosecutors obtain the necessary evidence within a tight timeframe. The assistance was carried out using a Working Arrangement recently signed between the National Centre for International Judicial Cooperation (NCIJC) of Iraq and Eurojust’s partners.
The cooperation, Eurojust reports, allowed the evidence to be secured before the maximum period for the accused’s remand in custody expired. As a result, the prosecution was able to proceed with the matter in accordance with the court process and time limits.
While the court has now imposed a five-year prison sentence, the ruling has not been final, meaning legal avenues may still be available before it becomes conclusive.
The Eurojust update focuses on the cross-border cooperation that enabled the evidence to be obtained from Iraq in time for the Slovenian court proceedings.
