Slovenian Police mark Police Day with wreaths at Tacen and Nove Žale
Officials laid wreaths to honour police officers who died in the 1991 War for Slovenia and on duty after 1991.
Slovenian police marked Police Day on 27 June 2026 with memorial ceremonies in Ljubljana.
Representatives from the Ministry of the Interior and Public Administration, the Police, and veterans’ organisations laid wreaths at Tacen Memorial Park and at Nove Žale in Ljubljana. The events were held to honour police officers who gave their lives for security, independence, and the country.
At the memorials, a delegation led by the Minister for the Interior and Public Administration, Franci Matoz, laid wreaths not only for officers who lost their lives in the 1991 War of Independence, but also for colleagues who died while carrying out police duties after 1991.
Police Day was described as a day of remembrance, respect and gratitude for veterans of the war for Slovenia and for those who helped establish the Slovenian police force. The programme also included recognition of the work of past and present police officers, described as professional, lawful and dedicated, contributing to public safety every day.
The Acting Director-General of the Police, Danijel Lorbek, said the police will continue to work professionally, lawfully and efficiently, and emphasised support for police staff, strengthening security in local communities, and maintaining public trust. The article also noted that public safety depends not only on police work, but on cooperation with the public, including reporting incidents and acting responsibly.
The ceremonies were part of a wider month of events that began with a main ceremony on 3 June in Krško, with additional activities held across the country to mark Police Day and showcase police work and strengthen links between the police and the public.
