Amsterdam police arrest 23-year-old suspect in Hajar death case
Her body was found in a suitcase on 16 October, investigators say the probe is ongoing.
Police in Amsterdam arrested a 23-year-old man in the investigation into the death of Hajar. During a press conference, mayor Femke Halsema, chief prosecutor René de Beukelaer and police gave an update on the case after her body was found in a suitcase on 16 October.
The suspect is a man without a fixed address or place of residence, with a Somali background and an indefinite residence permit. He was initially treated as a witness, but investigators later changed his status to suspect after further research. He is currently under restrictions and may only have contact with his lawyer.
Police said they are still investigating where Hajar died and what exactly happened. Justification for the shift from witness to suspect cannot be shared because it could harm the investigation. So far, prosecutors say there is no known relationship between the suspect and Hajar.
It is also unclear whether Hajar voluntarily went with him, or whether there was a robbery. Prosecutors added that the suspect has previously committed criminal offences, but those involved shoplifting.
Halsema expressed condolences to Hajar’s family and said almost two weeks have passed between hope and fear. Police described the death as violent and said they worked with full dedication to try to save her, but that was not successful. She also stressed that violence against women is a long-standing social problem and urged people to wait for the outcome of the investigation. The photo of Hajar was shared in consultation with the family eight days after her disappearance, and any new publication will be discussed with them.
The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect remains in custody under restrictions with only contact with his lawyer.
