SPAK charges Eurocol businessman Pandeli Carapuli with money laundering
Investigations into the Surrel villa and alleged tender links extend another three months.
Pandeli Carapuli, a businessman tied to the construction of Prime Minister Edi Rama's private residence in Surrel, has been summoned to SPAK to receive charges over alleged money laundering.
SPAK has moved to treat the case more seriously, communicating official accusations to Carapuli along with his lawyer. The probe has also been extended by another three months.
Investigators say Carapuli’s company, Eurocol, benefited from state contracts and tenders worth millions of euros from Albcontrol while Belinda Balluku was running the company. Prosecutors allege the “favorable exchange” helped lead to Balluku receiving a luxurious villa on the Dhërmi coast.
SPAK has placed the suspected holiday residence under preventive seizure. The file also includes preventive measures over other assets, with SPAK having seized two villas suspected to be hidden assets linked to Balluku.
In parallel, Balluku appeared at SPAK and was notified that the investigations have been extended until January of next year. She did not make comments to the media as she entered and left the Special Prosecution Office.
Carapuli is now charged as a defendant in the money-laundering case, while the investigation continues following SPAK’s extension of the timeline.
