German police detained a suspect after a fire broke out at the historic mountain guest house known as the “Eagle’s Nest” in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria. Around 200 firefighters and emergency personnel were called to the Kehlsteinhaus on Friday to tackle the blaze, police said. Police are investigating whether the suspect, who was detained close to the scene, was connected to the fire, according to a statement. Built in 1938 as a guest house for Nazi officials and their guests, the building sits in a prominent Alpine setting and is separate from Hitler’s nearby summer residence, the Berghof. After the war, the Kehlsteinhaus was classified as a historical monument recalling the Nazi period. The investigation is ongoing after police made the arrest near the fire scene.
