Suspected robbery attempt in Vienna, attacker allegedly punched victim after botched ATM withdrawal
A 30-year-old was arrested in November, after a 29-year-old was allegedly threatened to withdraw cash.
Police in Vienna are investigating a suspected attempted robbery in which a 29-year-old man was allegedly forced to withdraw cash that he could not access.
The incident took place on 16 September 2026 in Vienna-Floridsdorf. The suspect allegedly approached the man with threats of violence and demanded he hand over cash.
The victim, still present with the accused, then tried to withdraw money. The withdrawal attempt failed, and the two allegedly went to another bank branch in Floridsdorf, where the cash withdrawal again did not succeed.
After the second failed attempt, the suspect allegedly struck the 29-year-old in the face and injured him.
Vienna’s State Criminal Police Office, the North branch, took over the investigation. Investigators identified a 30-year-old man from the Russian Federation, and he was arrested on 3 November 2026 at his mother’s home. The arrest was carried out on an order issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Vienna. He refused to make a statement and was taken into custody at a detention facility by order of prosecutors.
During a renewed interview with the victim, which took place after questions about the credibility of parts of his account, the 29-year-old said he had met the man through a social media platform as early as December 2025. The victim described a meeting on the day of the incident, after which he alleged he was threatened and pressured to withdraw money.
The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect remains in custody following the arrest.
