Suspected driver arrested after car attack injuring five in Neustadt
Police accuse the man of attempted homicide in five cases after a vehicle attack.
A driver has been arrested after a car attack in Neustadt am Rübenberge injured five people, police said.
The alleged attacker steered a vehicle late on Monday evening into a small group of people. Five victims were injured, from light to serious.
Officers were conducting a traffic check nearby when the attack happened. They fired at the car to stop it, then the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled.
The police later corrected an earlier report from the day before, when investigators had wrongly announced multiple arrests. At the time, there had only been an overall identity and person check as part of ongoing police searches.
On Tuesday, authorities said they have now detained a suspect for the attack. Prosecutors and police said the man is expected to be brought before an examining judge soon.
Investigators accuse the suspect of attempted homicide in five cases. Police say there is urgent suspicion that the man deliberately drove at several specific people. The suspect’s age and nationality were not disclosed.
Police are still appealing for tips from witnesses, especially anyone with video recordings that could help identify the perpetrator and any other involvement in the case.
