Police in a Chicago suburb say they stopped a suspected mass shooting targeting a Hindu place of worship in Aurora, Illinois. Alexandros Paporakis, a Taco Bell cashier from Palatine, faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing weapons. Prosecutors allege he planned to target the largest Hindu temple in Aurora, though the exact intended location was still under investigation. Investigators searched Paporakis' condo and found an AR-style rifle with no serial number, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a tactical vest, a gas can, and items with Nazi symbolism. Court documents say he wrote an eight-page manifesto using derogatory and racially charged slurs and targeted people of Indian descent at a Hindu house of worship. Prosecutors say Paporakis sent signals to a co-worker at a Taco Bell in Arlington Heights. Investigators allege he became manic over the weekend and sent a video of the AR-style rifle and a photo of himself wearing a tactical vest, prompting the co-worker to call police. Palatine police arrested Paporakis on Sunday. Officers said they seized an AR-style rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and other tactical gear at his apartment. In pretrial detention documents obtained by WLS-TV, prosecutors said Paporakis described himself as a “sociopathic white supremacist Neo Nazi filled with hatred” and claimed he drove to a location to fire his gun at a man before the weapon jammed. Prosecutors also said he had been planning the attack for two years and suffers from mental health issues. Police are coordinating with the FBI, and more charges could come. Paporakis is in custody pending further court proceedings.
