Police in Ternopil have opened a criminal case against a 53-year-old man accused of taking people hostage in a shop, detonating a grenade-like device, and firing shots. The suspect was detained by the special police unit KORD. Officers said the man was distracted during negotiations, and the hostages managed to escape through a service exit. After the escape, the accused allegedly detonated an object resembling a grenade and began shooting. During the operation, police arrested the armed man. An in-house search reportedly found an item resembling a pistol and a hunting knife. No one was injured in the incident. Investigators also established that the man had visited the same shop before the attack and behaved aggressively, getting into conflicts with staff. Police said he left the premises and returned later with a weapon. The case was qualified under articles covering unlawful deprivation of liberty and threats or violence against a law enforcement officer. Police detained him under Article 208 of Ukraine’s Criminal Procedure Code. The suspect is currently in custody, while investigators work on announcing a formal suspicion and choosing a preventive measure.
