Thai police arrest Chinese suspect tied to $75m crypto laundering network
Authorities allege the scheme used more than 133 accounts and involved forged residence documents.
Thai immigration police arrested a 37-year-old Chinese man wanted by Chinese authorities over alleged links to a transnational criminal network in Bangkok’s Saphan Sung district, on October 16.
Investigators alleged the group handled more than 500 million yuan, about $75 million, through more than 133 accounts, using cryptocurrency and foreign-currency exchange operations.
Police detained the suspect at a luxury housing estate in Saphan Sung after he allegedly evaded capture for more than three years. Investigators said he used forged documents to report his residence and changed his vehicle registration plates before his arrest.
Authorities alleged the network recruited people to open mule accounts and then managed more than 133 of them for criminal enterprises. Police said the accounts supported crypto and foreign-currency exchange activities for criminal groups, and they linked the operation to a money-laundering scheme tied to a loan-sharking gang.
Thai immigration checks found the man’s permission to remain in Thailand had expired about three years and eight months earlier. Police charged him with remaining in the Kingdom after his permission to stay had expired under Section 81 of the Immigration Act 1979.
Police said deportation procedures would begin and that they would coordinate with Chinese officials to arrange his return to face an outstanding arrest warrant in China. A spokesman for Cointelegraph reported his Thai visa had expired more than three years ago.
