Thai police have arrested a Chinese national accused of running a transnational cryptocurrency money laundering operation, linked to more than $74 million in transactions. Wu Chaoshuai was taken into custody after Thai immigration investigators tracked him down in Bangkok’s Ramkhamhaeng area, police said. He entered Thailand on a tourist visa in December 2019 and remained after it expired more than three years ago. Investigators say Wu allegedly managed a network that used cryptocurrency to obscure illicit funds and move them across borders. Authorities allege he acted as an account mule, hiring others to open bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchange accounts to help disguise the origin and flow of money. Police say Wu oversaw 133 accounts and processed transactions worth over $74 million. To avoid being tracked, he reportedly moved around Thailand frequently, renting houses and luxury condos in different communities rather than staying in one place. Thai press reported he also changed his car color and used fake license plates and forged documents. Thai authorities said the case followed an investigation that also looked into actions involving several Thai immigration police officials. Wu is set to be charged with remaining in Thailand after his visa expired, and Thai police will coordinate his extradition with Chinese authorities.
