Three arrested after stone-throwing in Steenberg and Lavender Hill
Police arrested three men aged 19 to 21 and are calling in seven minors after Thursday unrest.
Three men have been arrested after stone-throwing and burning rubble disrupted parts of Steenberg and Lavender Hill in the Western Cape on Thursday morning, police said.
The arrests were made after complaints of public violence, when police rushed to the corner of St Christopher and Military Roads.
Officers found boys at the scene throwing stones at each other, affecting road users and damaging property. Police located seven boys aged between 13 and 17. They are being called in for questioning, but were not arrested, while police continued to deploy additional resources in the area.
Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel F.C. Van Wyk said three men, aged between 19 and 21, were arrested on charges of public violence. They are expected to appear at the Wynberg Magistrates' Court. Van Wyk said the motive behind the stone-throwing is still under investigation.
Police increased their presence around Steenberg and Lavender Hill, deploying members of the Anti-Gang Unit, Public Order Policing, Metro Police and law enforcement. The deployment was expected to remain in place while any threat to public safety was being dealt with.
Steenberg Community Police Forum chairperson Nicola Small said St Montague Village, Cuban Heights and Lavender Hill were hotspots and urged residents to be vigilant. She also raised concerns about children taking part or inciting unrest and called on parents and caregivers to take responsibility for children in their care.
According to police, seven boys identified at the scene are set to be questioned, while the three arrested men are in custody and will be taken to Wynberg Magistrates’ Court as they face charges of public violence.
