Three men arrested over 22,700 euros stolen telephone cable
Guardia Civil stopped the suspects on the A-66, near Villafranca de los Barros.
Spanish Guardia Civil arrested three men suspected of stealing telephone cable worth about 22,700 euros.
The arrests were made after investigators linked the cable to thefts from disused telecom lines in Montánchez. The recovered material was later found when the three men were travelling on the A-66 in the area of Villafranca de los Barros.
The investigation began in May, when officers intercepted a vehicle on the A-66 within the term of Villafranca de los Barros. After identifying the three occupants, Guardia Civil inspected the car.
Inside, police found a large amount of telecom cable whose legitimate origin they could not prove. Under the seats, officers also found tools allegedly used to cut this type of material, along with “pies de gato” climbing footwear used to help scale vertical structures such as telephone poles.
Analysis of the seized cable and further work with other Guardia Civil units in Cáceres allowed investigators to determine the wiring had been stolen recently from different sections of lines in Montánchez. The affected company later acknowledged the recovered cable and valued it at approximately 22,700 euros. Police said the theft did not cause damage to service because the facilities were outside use.
In July and again in early October, Guardia Civil, with support from officers in Sevilla, located and arrested the three suspected responsible in their hometown. The case files have been sent to the Civil and Instruction Section of the Tribunal de Instancia of Cáceres for the next stage of the court process.
