The Tirana Court has decided to extradite 32-year-old Julide Yazici to Turkey after she was arrested in Albania over alleged links to a terrorist organization. The Court of Appeal had already upheld the “prison arrest” measure two months earlier for the Turkish citizen, who was placed in custody following a Turkish wanted alert. Yazici is accused by Turkish justice of providing logistical support to a terrorist organization and of participating in a terrorist organization. Turkish authorities also linked her to alleged involvement in protests supporting Kurdish rights held in Turkey several years ago. A case file described evidence connected to the investigation as being found during searches of an apartment in Istanbul. In Turkey, Yazici was sentenced in absentia to four years in prison for the offences. At the time of the extradition decision, she had three years, 5 months and 22 days remaining on that sentence. Her lawyers and Yazici told the Albanian court she is being politically persecuted because of her stance against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and argued her life would be at risk if she is extradited to Turkey. She was arrested for extradition purposes and detained in Rinas while travelling from France to Albania. Checks at the border crossing found she was wanted by Interpol Ankara. A source close to Interpol Ankara said Yazici had been a student seven years ago and participated in protests against Erdogan’s government. The Tirana Court has now ruled for her extradition to Turkey.
