Tirana antigovernment rally ends in clashes as 300 injured
Police used tear gas and water cannon after attacks on government buildings.
Thousands of protesters clashed with police in Tirana, Albania, leaving more than 300 protesters and officers injured, authorities said.
The antigovernment rally on Saturday escalated after police moved to disperse crowds using tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets. Authorities said several government buildings were attacked, dozens of demonstrators were arrested, and protesters threw stones and rolled burning bins at the Ministry of Education.
The demonstration followed a wave of protests that began in mid-October over poor school conditions and the cost of living. While protests in Tirana had calmed in recent days, Saturday’s gathering reignited tensions.
University professors, artists and opposition parties announced support for or attendance at the rally. Police introduced heightened security around the capital, with local media reporting checks on cars heading into Tirana.
Albania has seen intermittent antigovernment protests since May, after news emerged of a luxury hotel project linked to US President Donald Trump’s family. Public anger has broadened into demands over corruption, living costs and the resignation of Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama, who blamed “foreign actors” for violence and accused Russia and Iran of driving online misinformation.
Authorities reported more than 300 injured and said dozens were arrested. The clashes occurred during the Saturday rally, with police security measures in place across Tirana.
