Police detained 23 people after clashes during a student protest in Tirana, Albania, where demonstrators and officers fought in the streets near the Education Ministry.
The incident left 6 police officers and one journalist injured. Police said they used tear gas and pressurized water to disperse crowds and prevent protesters from entering the ministry compound.
The protest began outside the Education Ministry, with students complaining about education costs, inadequate financial support and unemployment. As the demonstration continued, tensions escalated into violent incidents.
At the ministry gates, some protesters threw bricks and concrete blocks. They also damaged ministry perimeter fencing and destroyed an entrance gate in an attempt to get into the compound.
After the clashes, the unrest spread into surrounding streets. Reports said some protesters lit fires and entered a nearby business, moving furniture outside. The furniture was then reportedly set alight, sparking additional disorder.
Protesters also allegedly threw molotov cocktails, stones and other hard objects at security forces, prompting further police intervention with tear gas and water cannon.
Albanian authorities launched an investigation to identify people responsible for the violent acts during the protest. Some students claimed they were targeted by police even though they said they were not involved in violence.
Latest status: 23 people were taken into custody, while investigations into those responsible are ongoing.
