A man opened fire on passers-by in Trappes and La Verrière, in the Yvelines, killing one person and injuring several others, prompting the national antiterrorist prosecutor’s office to take over. The shooting happened on Friday morning, around 10:30. A first police-linked report put the toll at one dead and four wounded, while later figures from police sources cited at least ten injured. The death toll and injury numbers were not yet stabilized as emergency services continued their work. The suspect allegedly fired from his vehicle across different neighbourhoods. Trappes mayor Ali Rabeh said the shooter appeared to fire at random. La Verrière mayor Nicolas Dainville said an injured teenager aged 12 was being treated with a stabilized condition. He also mentioned two adult men, aged 29 and 49, who were transported to different hospitals. Police arrested the alleged shooter quickly in Coignières, and he was placed in police custody. According to media reporting, he was 39 years old and had used a submachine gun of a Sten type. Reports also said the suspect was known to police for drug trafficking, property damage and receiving stolen goods. During an earlier search at the suspect’s apartment, sources said it was found to have gas cylinders set up like a trap. The national antiterrorist prosecutor’s office said it seized the case for murder and attempted murder linked to a terrorist enterprise, with the circumstances described in terms of a claimed or presumed affiliation to an alleged race, ethnicity, nation or religion. France’s interior minister Laurent Nuñez said he would travel to the area. The investigation is ongoing under the antiterrorist prosecutor’s office, with the suspect held in custody after his arrest.
