Carabinieri arrested two people in flagrance after an alleged scam targeting an 85-year-old woman in Milazzo, involving a call from someone posing as a Carabiniere. The suspects are a 22-year-old and a 25-year-old, both from the province of Catania. They are accused of aggravated fraud, aggravated robbery and kidnapping, and also of resistance to a public official. Police say the woman received a phone call from a “sedicente Carabiniere” who told her to collect all money and jewelry she had to check their origin, citing a possible link to a robbery. Soon after, the 22-year-old forced his way into the home, pushed the woman’s caregiver aside, snatched the caregiver’s cellphone to stop her calling for help, and then went inside with the 85-year-old before taking her valuables. The caregiver managed to reach a neighbor, and the emergency number 112 was contacted. Carabinieri from Milazzo’s Radiomobile and officers from San Pier Niceto rushed to the scene. They spotted the 22-year-old while he tried to escape through a window, and after a brief struggle they stopped him despite his resistance. At the same time, the 25-year-old was intercepted in a car waiting outside. The two were arrested in flagrante and taken to the prison facilities of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and Messina, at the disposal of the judicial authority. Their latest status is detained as accused, awaiting proceedings by the court.
