Turkish fugitive arrested in Isipingo after extradition request
He is wanted in Türkiye over alleged rape, sexual assault and kidnapping.
A 40-year-old Turkish fugitive wanted in Türkiye over alleged rape, sexual assault, kidnapping and assault was arrested in Isipingo, KwaZulu-Natal.
Interpol South Africa’s Fugitive Investigation Team, Crime Intelligence and Isipingo police arrested him on Thursday after Turkish authorities issued an extradition request.
Police said the man was accused of kidnapping his then-fiancée in 2010 and raping her over several days.
He was also accused of repeatedly assaulting her, leaving her with permanent physical and psychological injuries, with the victim said to have been 22 at the time of the alleged offences.
After the investigation, the suspect allegedly fled Türkiye and was traced to Isipingo. Interpol National Central Bureau Pretoria obtained and executed a warrant, and the man was arrested during a coordinated operation involving police and private security personnel.
The suspect appeared in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court on Friday facing an extradition application by the government of Türkiye.
He remains in custody as the extradition process continues.
