Police detained two men suspected of stealing around 4,000 euros in cash from a shop in Jõhvi and later moving the money on in Pärnu. According to Ida prefektuur, the theft was reported in mid-October. A man entered the store and distracted the cashier, while the shop’s cash was left in a handbag under a coat. After the two suspects took the cash from the bag, they fled from the store. The police initially treated the case as complex and worked to identify the suspects using witness accounts and nearby surveillance footage. A break came after a company-installed camera provided footage showing both suspects, their vehicle, and its registration number. Because the licence plate was not registered in Estonia, police across the country were alerted and vehicle information was sent to patrols and number-reading cameras. The car was located in Pärnu by the next morning, when officers spotted the targeted vehicle outside a local accommodation. Quick-response teams moved in at the scene and detained a 30-year-old and a 36-year-old. A search found euros, US dollars, and UK pounds in the men’s possessions. Prosecutors asked the court to remand both suspects in custody, and the court granted the request. The criminal investigation is ongoing, and further details will be established in the case file.
