Police arrest 2 fugitives in Bardonecchia on EU warrants
One was accused of online fraud, the other faces a sentence for attempted murder.
Frontier police in Bardonecchia arrested two fugitives wanted under European Arrest Warrants, bringing them back into custody in separate cases.
The controls carried out by the Police of Frontiera identified the two men as recipients of different EU warrants. The operation led to one arrest over alleged fraud and the other over an attempted murder conviction, with the younger man also detained for possessing a false travel document.
A 19-year-old Romanian man was wanted for fraud. Investigators allege that between March and June 2026 he convinced employees of companies to carry out top-ups and money transfers by posing as a transactions company operator and claiming technical checks were needed. Authorities say the amounts, in thousands of lei, moved through bank accounts and online gaming platforms before being withdrawn and transferred.
During the stop, police found the 19-year-old with an identity document described as false and valid for travel, leading to his arrest for possessing a forged document as well as execution of the European warrant.
The second suspect, a 20-year-old, was wanted for attempted murder. A Romanian judgment says that on 15 April 2025 he stabbed a man on the left side of the chest with a cutting weapon with intent to kill. The victim survived due to causes independent of the attacker’s will and suffered injuries including fractured ribs and a small pneumothorax.
The court set a remaining prison term of 4 years and 6 months. The European Arrest Warrant was issued on 4 August 2026 for the arrest and surrender of the 20-year-old to Romanian authorities to serve the sentence.
Both men were located during the frontier area checks, and police say the arrests allowed the respective EU warrants to be carried out.
